Social Work Internships

job_gh_kids1There are many meaningful social work internships in Ghana, due in part to the level of social inequality that Ghana is currently dealing with. Inequalities in education, health care, housing and employment opportunities are being addressed by nonprofits and government agencies, often with key roles being played by social workers. Whether your interest lies in working with young people affected by HIV/AIDS, or carrying out psycho-social screenings at a refugee case center, or something else, our Ghana team would love to find the social work internship that’s right for you.

Medical Assistance

    Medical Assistance

In this progam, volunteers will be working hospital, clinic or care facility, where you will initially shadow doctors and other medical staff to gain an understanding of the day to day practice of medicine in Ghana. Depending on individual education and experience, volunteers may then take part in various procedures, and/or assist local doctors and nurses in their daily duties. This program allows volunteers to work in rotation, thus experiencing the different an often challenging aspects of the medical field.

The Medical program in Ghana ideal for med and pre-med students, as well as medical professionals of all disciplines. Those who wish to volunteer on this program, but do not have relevant education and/or experience, may do so under the strict knowledge that they will likely be limited in their capacity to physically contribute, and in most cases will often find themselves acting more as an ‘observer’.

Volunteers work alongside the local staff and they will assist with translations. Volunteers need to be ready to think outside of the square as the hospital has limited resources and equipment for example listening to baby’s heart beats is done manually as they do not have a sonogram.

In addition to volunteering in a hospital, all volunteers will participate in community outreach programs during their stay. The outreach programs include assisting with HIV testing, school and orphanage awareness programs and crisis control which may see volunteers helping with community immunization.

This is a great opportunity for volunteers in the medical field to get experience in different areas of medical care and also to share learning and knowledge with the locally trained staff.

NOTE: Volunteers are required to bring scrubs or a lab coat and supplies of gloves and face masks.

NOTE: Due to the interaction with local people, knowledge of the English language is highly recommended for this project, including medical terminologies. English lessons specific to the medical field can be arranged during your placement in Ghana, prior to your participation in this program.
